 Cabin Fever Cure      fly tying

Now that the weather is starting to warm up and Al Gore has been proven wrong for the third year in a row, it is time to dust off the fly rods and do some casting.  Starting next week, I will make myself available on Thursday after work and Sunday morning before church for fly-casting lessons.  By offering 2 days a week in the beginning, it will allow more flexibility in people's schedules and reduce the size of the group enabling more one on one instruction.  You can go twice a week, once every other week...you determine the schedule.

Taking private lessons could cost you hundreds if not a thousand dollars to learn this skill at a qualified fly shop. Why not save some money – have some fun - and learn it for a fraction of that cost right here in Oakland .  Fly-fishing is therapeutic (recommended for shoulder injuries and breast cancer patients), relaxing and allows you countless quality time with nature as well as your family.

Each 1.5-hour lesson will be $20.00 for adults and $10.00 for kids and you need not own equipment to sign up; I have four complete set ups that we can use. However, if you have your own equipment, please bring it because it is always best to learn on the actual equipment you will be using in the stream.  All proceeds will go to the Oakland Republican Club in the form of a donation.

Kindly email me at emmettj123@aol.com if you are interested in learning how to fly cast and want to sign up for our lessons.

Congratulation All Oakland Residents

Our town has been named the 43rd "Best Place to Raise Your Kids, 2007" by Business Week magazine. The article, written by Douglas MacMillan, ranks the top 50 cities places in the U.S. that offer kids - and their parents-the right combination of safety, community, and education.

The author worked with the national real estate researcher, OnBoard, to create the rankings using various criteria. Oakland received a total score of 286.86 in the following categories:

  • Schools Score - 12.81 (7th out of 50)

  • Recreational/Cultural Activities Score - 29.19 (9th out of 50)

  • Test Scores - 92.11 (ranked 45th out of 50)

  • Cost of Living Score - 72.81 (ranked 45th out of 50)

  • Crime Score - 79.93 (44th out of 50)

  • Oakland was one of only 3 New Jersey towns, and is the only metropolitan town, to receive this prestigious honor.

You can read the full on-line article by going to Business Week where you can read the article.
